Israel and Lebanon Accept Proposal to End Conflict

Under significant pressure from U.S. officials, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced today he has agreed to a ceasefire in Israel’s conflict with the Iran-backed militia group Hezbollah. The Biden administration has said the governments of Israel and Lebanon have accepted the proposal.

Negotiations have been ongoing for weeks. The agreement stipulates that Israel would withdraw from Lebanon over the next 60 days, while Hezbollah will move further away from Israel’s border. This “buffer zone” will be enforced by the Lebanese Army and monitored by an international committee.

Ahead of the truce, Israeli forces conducted an extensive wave of airstrikes this morning on Hezbollah-related targets in Beirut.
