U.S. Tensions Reignite with Iran

Over the weekend, while the United States was tuned to the Super Bowl, Iranians marked the anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution. That uprising led to the establishment of an Islamic Republic, putting Iran and its people under the control of radical Muslim clerics and supreme leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.

It instituted a deadly theocracy governed by Islamic law. Today Khomenei’s successor, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, is the current Supreme Leader of Iran.

Now, with Trump in the White House, tensions between the U.S. and Iran have never been higher. Iran’s society is failing. Its currency fell to a record low against the dollar. Economic sanctions from the West are destroying its economy. Its proxies, Hamas and Hezbollah, are reeling from their wars with Israel. And Trump is threatening more sanctions against Tehran while also suggesting its time for new nuclear deal.

Cornered and vulnerable, Iran’s top military commanders are now asking Khamenei to further commit to developing nuclear weapons.
