Palestinian Statehood?
Headlines in Israel this week have been focused on the United Nations Security Council and its vote to endorse U.S. President Trump’s plan for Gaza. That vote included approval for a “Board of Peace” to supervise the project. In addition, it established a legal mandate for an “International Stabilization Force” to disarm Hamas and prevent further conflict.
It also approved a path for Palestinian Statehood.
Of course, just like making a cake, there needs to be a recipe.
One problem is that the “recipe” approved by the U.N. Security Council is long on generalities but very, very short on specifics. Who will serve on the “Board of Peace”? What will be the extent of its authority? From where will the “International Stabilization Force” draw personnel? Every Islamic nation in the Middle East has emphatically rejected sending troops that would be required to militarily act against violations of Trump’s plan by Hamas.
Who does that leave? Just U.S. and Israeli personnel? If so, who will have final authority over actions to be taken?
In short, will the “Board of Peace” and the “International Stabilization Force” supersede Israel’s sovereignty?
And Palestinian Statehood? From the Prime Minister’s office and throughout almost all Israel, the prospect of a Palestinian State is anathema.
