Behind The Headlines

It is hard to believe that the Bondi Beach slaughter of Jews was only five days ago. Some stories, like this one, are so immense it seems they must be much older than they are. Perhaps that is because, in a very real way, they are old. Very old.

Murderous hatred of Jews, including plots to slaughter them, began when the Jews were in Egypt. Accordingly, they are even older than Haman. Even so, Haman is a perfect paradigm of antisemitism rapidly turning into genocidal intent. The book of Esther reveals that hatred’s entire life cycle, from hubris provoked by envy all the way to attempted annihilation of God’s uniquely chosen human family.

And it shows how one person can stop that murderous tidal wave by refusing to retreat, by standing up against it in spite of mortal risk.

In fact, Jimmy Evans and John Andersen have just completed a yet-to-be-published book about this very thing. Its working title is Haman’s Lies. It is a masterpiece. Keep your eye out for it and when you can, get it.

In the summary of top news that you see below, there are several stories about Bondi Beach and its surprising hero, a “righteous gentile,” in fact an Arab man by the name of Ahmed al-Ahmed. These are reports in which to soak, but they are not the only ones.

When it comes to Israel-related news, there are always many things happening at the same time. This week’s stories are no exception.

Whenever reading or hearing the news, the day’s biggest headlines, like Bondi Beach, should not be ignored. At the same time, however, we must be diligent to ask, “What is happening behind those headlines?”

As always with Israel, there is a lot.
