Welcome to this debut of a new Tipping Point report. Every Friday we will be looking at the most important Israel-related stories for the preceding week.
This should be a good way to ascend a few feet from the rapid flow of daily reports for a birds-eye view of developing trends. And for those of us who have been so swept up in the demands of daily life, it will also be a way to catch up on news that was missed.
Perhaps the biggest trend of this week’s stories has to do with Israel’s ring of fire. Systematically encircling Israel, tightening its inflamed noose, Iran spent decades provoking and underwriting Israel’s enemies on every side: to the north, Hezbollah in Lebanon; to its east, within Israel’s borders, terror cells in Judea and Samaria; to the south, the Houthis in Yemen; and to its southwest, Hamas in Gaza.
When Hamas terrorists invaded Israeli territory on 7 October 2023, the hope was that this ring of fire would fully ignite on all these fronts, snuffing out the life of the Jewish State.
In spite of the horrific atrocities inflicted by Hamas, that ring of fire did not fully ignite on all sides, at least it did not all at once. Israeli sons and daughters, dads and moms in the IDF fought back, engaging in urban warfare in Gaza unlike any other the world has ever seen; tackling Hezbollah’s relentless rocket attacks from the north, miraculously taking out its leaders with exploding beepers and precision missiles; responding directly to Iran’s hell-bent intent to destroy the State with ballistic missiles and the development of nuclear weapons.
What we have witnessed is nothing less than God’s intervention, blessing Israel’s military efforts, preserving the life of his uniquely chosen human family in the land he has deeded to them forever.
After the defeat of Iran in its 12 day war with Israel last June, there was reason to hope the ring of fire had been extinguished once for all.
But it hasn’t.
The big message from this week’s reports is that the ring of fire is attempting to recover, to reignite and strike again. Hamas refuses to disarm. Hezbollah is rapidly rearming. The Houthis are ready to resume attacks. And Iran is rapidly moving ahead to manufacture so many ballistic missiles, Israel’s defensive shield will be unable to stop them all. It also claims to have preserved enriched uranium that the U.S. claims was destroyed by its bunker buster bombs on 13 June.
In response, and U.S. President Trump’s efforts notwithstanding, Israel is forced to plan for renewed conflicts with each of these.
