Israel and Hamas Agree to Phase 1 of Peace Deal

As of yesterday evening, Israel and Hamas have agreed to the first part of President Trump’s peace deal thanks to three days of intense negotiations this week. It’s a historic moment for the Middle East, and the result of a combination of factors, including Trump’s decision to strike Iran over the summer, his support of Israel, and his friendly relationship with nations like Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey.

Fox News reports on the details:

Under the agreement, Israel will release hundreds of Palestinian prisoners in exchange for all remaining hostages, both living and dead. Israel will also withdraw its troops from most of Gaza, removing themselves behind a “yellow line” during a 24-hour ceasefire that has already begun.

At the end of the ceasefire, a 72-hour clock will begin, during which Hamas must release all remaining hostages.

I expect the remaining hostages to be released late Sunday or early Monday morning. The timing for the release of the bodies of the hostages who have died—there are around 28—is less clear.
