One Frame Is Not A Film

There is a discipline in reading the news that is easy to skip. We read one story at a time, never stepping back to see it in context. Single stories in the news are like a single frame of a movie. What we miss is the arc, the development, of a story.

The real news is never a single headline. The real story of every story is where it started, how it moved, what changed, what stayed the same. A single report is a photograph. A developing story is a film. We cannot understand a film by watching just one frame.

This week’s news in review is a perfect illustration.

Take the U.S.-Iran deal. The headline version is simple: America and Iran reached an agreement. Trump called it a win. End of story. But watch it develop. First came the negotiations in Switzerland, with neither Israel nor Hezbollah in the room. Then came the terms: Iran limits its nuclear program, America eases sanctions. Then came Vice President Vance, warning Israeli critics to stand down. Then came the poll. Ninety-two percent of Israelis believe Iran won.

That number does not make sense if we only read the headline. It makes complete sense if we watched the story develop.
