News Alert: Damascus Falls, Assad Flees

December 8, 2024 · 6 min read

Sunday morning here in the United States brought word that Syrian President Bashar Assad had fled the country, ending his 14-year reign as a dictator over Syria during a civil war. His control over Syria had been propped up by relationships with Russia and Iran. The Assad family had been in charge of Syria for the past 50 years.

An aggressive rebel offensive took them down after entering Damascus. They set detainees free from jail, took over the state television stations and called on opposition fighters to preserve “the free Syrian state.” It marks a significant shift in the landscape of the Middle East—and it has major implications for Israel.
