After the Deaths of Hostages, Outrage Explodes in Israel

The past few days have been filled with grief and anger throughout Israel in what the New York Times calls “the broadest expressions of anti-government dissent since the war in Gaza began.”

Over the weekend, six hostages were confirmed dead in southern Gaza. Five had been taken by Hamas during their attack at a music festival on October 7. The sixth was taken from the village of Be’eri on October 7. The murdered hostages were identified as Carmel Gat, Eden Yerushalmi, Hersh Goldberg-Polin, Alexander Lobanov, Almog Sarusi and Ori Danino.

Goldberg-Polin was a dual Israeli-American citizen whose parents became highly visible campaigners for hostage release.

Israeli authorities said 60 hostages remained alive in Gaza, and 35 others are believed to be dead.

Throughout Israel, the pressure on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to bring home the remaining hostages built to a fever pitch in the hours following the news of the six dead hostages.
