Pacific on Alert: World’s Biggest Earthquake in 14 Years

Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, a massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the shore of the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia. It was the strongest earthquake in that sparsely populated area since 1952, and among the six most powerful quakes ever recorded on earth.

The shaking lasted around three minutes, damaging multiple buildings. There were several injuries but, thankfully, no confirmed fatalities.

But the earthquake put half the planet immediately on edge due to tsunami threats. It triggered alerts across the Pacific for Russia, Japan, Hawaii, the U.S. West Coast, and even French Polynesia and Central/South America. Almost 2 million people in Japan were evacuated.
