UK Leads Nations to Recognize Palestinian State + Other Headlines
Nations Formally Recognize Palestinian State
We knew this was coming, but it’s still jarring to see the headline: “UK, Australia and Canada recognize a Palestinian state.” Portugal also announced on Sunday that it was recognizing a Palestinian state. France made a similar statement yesterday. (Brian Schrauger also discussed this development in today’s video.)
Great Britain is leading this alignment of nations against Israel. Its involvement is particularly hurtful because, of course, Britain played a pivotal role in the establishment of the modern State of Israel as the British Mandate came to an end.
The goal of these countries is the usual two-state solution:
“Today, to revive the hope of peace and a two-state solution, I state clearly as prime minister of this great country that the United Kingdom formally recognizes the state of Palestine,” [Prime Minister Keir] Starmer said in a video message. “We recognized the state of Israel more than 75 years ago as a homeland for the Jewish people. Today we join over 150 countries who recognize a Palestinian state also.”
