Conflict Developing between U.S. and Venezuela
When we think of “wars and rumors of wars,” we tend to think of Russia, China and the Middle East—not South America. But a quiet conflict between the U.S. and Venezuela has started growing much more significant in recent days.
On Monday, news broke that three U.S. Navy destroyers and 4,000 American military personnel had been dispatched into the Caribbean Sea and would be stationed at the edge of Venezuela’s territorial waters.
In response, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro announced that he was deploying 4.5 million militiamen throughout the country. He said, “no empire will touch the sacred soil of Venezuela.”
